Her dissertation, The Divided State of America: Dissent in the Civil War North, won the 2005 Hay-Nicolay Prize for the best graduate work related to Abraham Lincoln. Her book, Copperheads, was published in 2006 Oxford University Press.
Currently, she is finishing a children's book on Gettysburg due next year and published by National Geographic. She is also writing on executive power in wartime and the impact of conscription on the Civil War North and South.
