John F. Marszalek is Giles Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History, Mississippi State University, retiring in 2002. In 2004, he returned on a part time basis as Director and Mentor of Distinguished Scholars. A graduate of Canisius College and the University of Notre Dame, he is the award-winning author or editor of twelve books, has lectured widely, and appeared on national television and radio. His most recent publications are Commander of All Lincoln's Armies, A Life of General Henry W. Halleck (2004) and Sherman's March to the Sea (2005). His Sherman, A Soldier's Passion for Order was a finalist for the Lincoln Prize in 1993. His first book Court Martial, A Black Man in America (1972) was made into a television motion picture Assault at West Point (1994), and a paperback was published under that same name. A Vietnam veteran, he and his wife Jeanne are the parents of three grown sons and have three grandchildren.
