Thanks to Cindy Willyard from Brandywine Jr. Historical Society:

Brandywine Elementary is part of the Southern Hancock School Corporation of New Palestine, Indiana. We have done several things to honor Mr. Lincoln.

The Brandywine Jr. Historical Society and the Student Council sponsored a very unique project. We asked members of each grade level to donate 200 "Snack Packs" for homeless veterans. The snack packs included meat, plastic forks and knives, napkins, peanuts, candy, rice krispie bars, granola bars, and trail mix.  We delivered our snack packs to the Richard L. Roudebush Veterans' Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Snack kits were taken to the homeless in various places including a facility where homeless veterans are provided job training. Below are photos of the students assembling the kits. We put the items into gallon sized zip lock bags.

Other Lincoln related programs have included:

  • A Veteran's ceremony in Lincoln's honor.
  • A Riley Children's Hospital fundraiser in honor of Lincoln's children.
  • A Jr. Historical Society fundraiser and a donation of $200 to our school library.
  • Paws in the Park honoring Lincoln's love of animals
  • A display case celebrating Lincoln's life and accomplishments.
  • Penny drive for homeless veterans.

Currently, Lincoln facts are posted daily on our school television site and we are completing an interdisciplinary unit on Lincoln at all grade levels.  Some of our artists have also participated in a stamp contest sponsored by the Indiana Department of Education.
