“ABRAHAM LINCOLN BICENTENNIAL CONCERT”

PERFORMED BY THE ILLINOIS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
FEBRUARY 11, 2009
PRAIRIE CAPITOL CONVENTION CENTER

BACKGROUND
Seeking to provide a family-oriented evening of entertainment on the eve of Lincoln’s 200th birthday, the Illinois Symphony will create and perform a narrated orchestra program using music to highlight American history with emphasis on the life and contributions of Abraham.

PROGRAM
The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 11, 2009.  A pre-concert performance by a City Gospel Chorus performing spirituals from Lincoln’s time will begin the evening.  An American Salute of uplifting tunes will be performed.  The concert will be approximately 80 minutes in length without intermission.  Illinois Symphony Music Director, Karen Lynne Deal, will program all artistic aspects of the concert program.  Narrators will read the words of Lincoln as part of the program.  America the Beautiful will be performed with voice over from Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.  Community and church choirs will participate as a mass chorus making this concert a city wide, multi-racial, multi-generational performance to truly commemorate Lincoln’s life and his contributions to mankind, Illinois and the nation.  A Color Guard will present the flag of the United States with musical accompaniment from local high school bands, the community orchestra and the mass chorus.

In keeping with a total city, state and family performance, the Bicentennial Concert will be free and open to the public.
