Michael P. Riccards is currently the executive director of the Hall Institute of Public Policy – NJ in Trenton, New Jersey, and previously was the president of three colleges and later public policy scholar at the College Board in Washington, DC. He is the author or editor of 14 books, including his two-volume history of the American presidency, The Ferocious Engine of Democracy. He is also the author of 12 plays, including two on Abraham Lincoln. Riccards is the author of the definitive study of Lincoln and the creation of the state of West Virginia in Presidential Studies Quarterly, and the popular two-part series in the The Washington Times comparing Lincoln and Jefferson Davis as commander-in-chief.
