Dr. Herschel Stroud is retired from a 37 year career in Dentistry. He and his wife, Jacque, are Civil War historians. They both have Civil War soldiers in their ancestry. They have lectured on Civil War Medicine in many states for the past 15 years. Herschel has been a long-term member of the Kansas State Historical Society, and serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Society. Governor Kathleen Sebelius appointed Dr. Stroud to the ALBC Governors' Council because of his interest in history, the Civil War, and Abraham Lincoln. Stroud's Civil War Union soldier ancestor was named Baltzer Young from St. Elmo, Illinois, near Vandalia where Lincoln rode the legal circuit as a young lawyer.

Thursday evening at the Topeka Public Library, the Topeka Lincoln Club met for its monthly meeting. The Lincoln Club, founded in 1966, has been meeting since than hosting Lincoln Scholars, and studying the many facets of Lincoln, his family and his legacy.
Seven year-old Levi Thomas, dressed as Lincoln, McClouth Elementary School, delivered a portion of the Gettysburg Address. Levi is the grandson of Dr. Robert Snook, Professor Emeritus from Washington University. Six year-old Zack Stockton, also dressed as Lincoln, gave a short discussion of Lincoln's life which ended with the Ford Theater assassination. The two miniature Lincolns were accompanied by 4 year old Sloan Stockton who dressed as a Union Civil War Soldier.
The formal program, an overview of Lincoln, was presented by the Club President, Dale Jirik, attired as President Abraham Lincoln complete with full beard and stove-pipe hat.
The National Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission has sponsored many events throughout the nation during 2009, commemorating the 200th birthday of our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln on February 12, 1809. A famous quote by Lincoln was, "If I were to go west, I think would go to Kansas."
