Jamil S. Zainaldin is president of the Georgia Humanities Council, where he has worked since 1997. He holds the BA in History from the University of Virginia and the PhD in History from the University of Chicago. Previously, he was president of the Washington-based national Federation of State Humanities Councils. He has also worked as deputy director of the American Historical Association and as the staff director of the U.S. Congressional Taskforce on Social Security and Women. He is adjunct professor in the History Department at Emory University. He is author or coauthor of two books on history and American law, as well as articles on that subject.
Mr. Zainaldin is a frequent writer and speaker on the public humanities, the value of the liberal arts for life preparation, citizenship, and the humanities and civil society. He is co-founder of the Georgia Center for Character Education, established the innovative Humanities Leadership Forum series of civic dialogues in Atlanta, and was instrumental in the development of the New Georgia Encyclopedia (www.georgiaencyclopedia.org ). Mr. Zainaldin also serves as lead historian for “Creating a Nation: Seeds of Democracy”, a Teaching American History Grant that is covering the Colonial era.

“Abraham Lincoln: Self-Made in America”

“Abraham Lincoln: Self-Made in America” examines Lincoln’s life from his beginnings in the crudest of circumstances to his ascension to the presidency and his assassination.
As part of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial celebration in 2009, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum (ALPLM), in collaboration with the American Library Association and the Tribeca Film Institute and with funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities’ We the People program has produced “Abraham Lincoln: Self-Made in America,” a learning station exhibit. This exhibit is composed of seven learning stations and has been designed for public spaces, libraries, historical societies, and other cultural or educational institutions.

"Letters to Lincoln"

“Lincoln: The Constitution & the Civil War”
Atlanta
This 2,500-square foot exhibition highlights the three constitutional crises that Lincoln faced as President: Secession, Slavery and Civil Liberties during the Civil War. The exhibit is presented through The National Constitution Center, Philadelphia.

“Lincoln” Exhibition of the Library of Congress
Atlanta History Center
The Atlanta History Center is planning to host the Library of Congress’s “Lincoln” exhibit in September-November, 2110 (tentative). The Georgia Humanities Council anticipates receiving a grant proposal from the AHC to support public programming events.

Town Hall Meeting - Atlanta
The Georgia Humanities Council, the ALBC, and the Center for Civil and Human Rights (Atlanta) will hold an ALBC-sponsored Town Hall meeting sometime in 2009. The theme-focused event will be faith traditions and the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, with a special emphasis on Atlanta and the South.
